All international flights to the Maldives land at Velana International Airport (MLE), located on an artificial island next to Malé. From there, guests reach their yacht by speedboat or seaplane, depending on the charter location and the time of day. Understanding how each option works — and which one applies to your charter — removes the main source of first-day uncertainty.
Speedboat transfers
Speedboat transfers operate between Velana International's domestic jetty and anchorages within roughly 90 minutes of Malé. This covers North Malé Atoll, South Malé Atoll and the nearer parts of Ari Atoll. The boats are purpose-built for the Maldives — covered, with luggage space and life jackets.
Speedboat transfers can operate day or night, which is a practical advantage for charter guests on late international flights. Azalea can be positioned within speedboat range of the airport so that a midnight arrival still gets guests aboard without an overnight hotel stop.
- Range: North Malé, South Malé, near Ari Atoll.
- Operates day and night — suitable for late arrivals.
- Transfer time: 20 minutes to 90 minutes depending on anchor position.
- Cost: typically included or itemised in the charter proposal.
- Luggage: soft bags recommended — rigid cases can be awkward on smaller boats.
Seaplane transfers
For charter guests heading to Ari Atoll, Baa Atoll or more remote positions, seaplanes operated by TMA (Trans Maldivian Airways) provide transfers from the seaplane terminal adjacent to Velana International. Flight times range from 20 to 45 minutes depending on the destination atoll.
The critical constraint is that seaplanes only operate in daylight hours — typically 06:00 to 17:30. Guests on flights arriving after dark must overnight in Malé and transfer the following morning. Charter planning should factor this in for groups on late-evening international connections.
- Operates daylight hours only — 06:00 to approximately 17:30.
- Covers Ari, Baa, Raa, Lhaviyani and outer atolls.
- Transfer time: 20 to 45 minutes.
- Luggage limit: typically 10–23 kg per person — check at booking.
- Late-arriving flights: guests overnight in Malé and transfer the following morning.
How Azalea coordinates transfers
Azalea's crew monitors all guest flight information before embarkation. For speedboat transfers, the captain positions the yacht within range and arranges the tender or speedboat timing around the arrival. For seaplane transfers, the charter manager coordinates with TMA and confirms the flight, luggage and transfer sequence.
Guests do not need to manage the logistics independently. The charter team handles the transfer from the moment the flight lands to boarding. The same process applies on departure day.
Luggage and packing for transfers
Both transfer methods have luggage considerations. Speedboats can accommodate standard rigid cases but soft duffel bags stow more easily in the bow and tender. Seaplanes have strict weight limits — typically 10 kg of hand luggage and 23 kg checked per person, though this varies by booking class.
For charter guests, soft bags are consistently the better option. They stow in cabin lockers and Dhoni storage more efficiently than rigid cases, and they work on both transfer methods without needing to be transferred between containers.
- Soft duffel or wheeled soft bags recommended over rigid suitcases.
- Seaplane weight limits: check at the time of booking — typically 10 kg hand + 23 kg hold.
- Dive equipment: Azalea carries tanks, weights and BCDs — guests need only their personal kit.
- Underwater camera and electronics: carry-on on all transfer types.
