South Malé is accessible year-round, but conditions vary significantly by season. November to April brings stable northeast monsoon conditions, good visibility and reliable channel dives. May to October sees more rainfall but concentrates whale sharks along the outer rim as plankton blooms increase.

• December to March: best visibility in the channels, peak manta season nearby.
• June to September: wet season, but whale shark encounters increase significantly.
• October to November: transitional — mix of plankton activity and improving conditions.

"The Guraidhoo channel is the first place I take guests who want to dive with sharks. The current comes through fast and the sharks follow it — you can see five or six in a single drift. For snorkellers, the eastern reef edge has the best table coral I know of in this atoll. The key is timing the entry at tide turn, which is easy to manage when you have a yacht holding position above.

• The outer rim is best approached from the south on an incoming tide.
• Whale sharks feed at the surface — look for feeding activity in the morning light.
• The interior lagoon anchorage is calm even in the wet season, making it a good shelter base.
