A month in the Maldives sounds appealing until someone asks a practical question: will the tourist visa cover the entire trip? The answer depends on the length of the visit and the permission issued by Maldives Immigration. For travellers considering a longer holiday, understanding these requirements early can make the difference between a comfortable plan and an unnecessary last-minute problem.

The finest journeys begin long before the anchor is raised.

01

Understanding the Standard Tourist Visa

Maldives Immigration grants tourist visas on arrival to eligible visitors who meet the entry requirements. The ordinary initial tourist visa allows up to 30 days. Visitors do not generally need to apply for tourist-visa pre-approval, but entry is determined by immigration officers. Travellers must meet the official conditions, including suitable travel documents, confirmed accommodation and onward or return travel arrangements. The immigration authorities can also require evidence of sufficient financial resources. These requirements are important for short holidays and extended stays alike.

02

What if You Want to Stay Longer?

The Maldives permits applications to extend tourist stays. Official Maldivian diplomatic guidance describes extensions up to a maximum of 90 days from the original arrival date, subject to immigration approval and applicable requirements. This does not mean that every traveller automatically receives 90 days. The actual permission issued by Maldives Immigration determines how long the visitor can remain. Applications must be made before the existing visa expires. Travellers planning extended holidays should confirm their eligibility and requirements directly rather than depend on an old travel article.

03

A Newer Online Extension Process

In April 2026, Maldives Immigration announced improvements to its tourist-visa extension system. The updated process allows visitors to submit applications through the official IMUGA portal. The system can retrieve passport and accommodation information already held by Immigration, reducing the need to enter the same details repeatedly. Applicants must provide a passport-size photograph taken within the preceding 12 months. Additional passport information or updated accommodation details may be required in particular circumstances. The official announcement says the improved system aims to complete applications within approximately 48 hours, but that is a processing expectation rather than a guaranteed approval deadline.

04

Before Travelling to the Maldives

Visitors should check the current entry requirements on the Immigration website. The free Traveller Declaration must be submitted through IMUGA within 96 hours before arrival. A confirmed booking at registered tourist accommodation and an appropriate onward travel plan are also important. If your intended visit extends beyond the ordinary initial permission, do not assume that a longer accommodation booking alone authorises the extra days. The visa and the booking are separate matters. It is sensible to discuss extended-stay intentions and extension arrangements before committing to non-refundable services.

05

Can You Change Accommodation During the Stay?

Yes, tourists may have an itinerary involving different registered accommodation providers. The April 2026 Immigration update specifically allows visitors who change accommodation to update the relevant details during the extension process. This is helpful for travellers who want to divide their holiday between different islands, resorts or other registered accommodation. It does not remove the requirement to maintain accurate information or comply with the conditions of the visa.

06

Does a Tourist Visa Allow You to Work?

A tourist visa is permission to visit the country for tourism, not a general employment or business authorisation. Official Maldivian diplomatic guidance cautions visitors against working or undertaking business engagements on tourist permission. Travellers intending to work, carry on business or relocate should check the appropriate visa category with Immigration. A longer holiday and a move to another country are legally different situations.

07

What About a Longer Yacht Charter?

Azalea can be chartered for extended journeys, including monthly stays. Its private suites, crew, dining and marine activities make it possible to discuss longer voyages that explore different parts of the Maldives. But a yacht booking does not extend a tourist visa. Guests planning to remain beyond the permission initially granted should complete the relevant immigration process and receive approval. The charter duration, onward flights and permitted stay should fit together.

08

Stay Longer, Plan Properly

An extended Maldives holiday should begin with the enjoyable decisions: where to go, what to experience and who to travel with. Understanding the visa arrangements early makes it easier to enjoy those choices with confidence.

When to visit the Maldives

Dec – Apr

Dry Season

The Northeast Monsoon brings calmer seas, lower rainfall and the clearest underwater visibility of the year.

May – Nov

Green Season

The Southwest Monsoon brings short showers, lush island greenery, fewer crowds and better value for longer charters.

Mid-Dec – Feb

Peak Season

Festive-period and February travel bring the highest demand for cabins, so these dates are the first to book out each year.

May – Nov

Manta Season

Plankton blooms draw manta rays and whale sharks to Baa and Ari Atoll, making this the strongest window for marine-life encounters.

Planning tips

Plan Your Perfect Voyage

A little planning goes a long way in ensuring an extraordinary experience. Here are our top tips for your charter.

Read our tips

Pick a route around what matters most to your group — diving, sandbanks, family comfort or a quiet private escape — and let the crew shape the days around it.

From manta encounters to sunset sandbank dinners, tell the team what you're hoping to see and do so it can be built into the route.

Light, breathable layers, reef-safe sunscreen and swimwear cover most days — the crew can advise on anything specific to your route.

Transfers, permits, dining preferences and daily timing are handled onboard, so the only decision left is what to do next.
