Baa Atoll Yacht Charter — Hanifaru Bay Manta Aggregations and UNESCO Reserve

Baa Atoll is the only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Maldives, and Hanifaru Bay holds the largest documented manta ray aggregation on earth. Azalea accesses the bay under the permitted system and holds position in the surrounding atoll when Hanifaru is at its most active.

The world's largest manta aggregation. Accessed properly, not from a day-boat queue.

Hanifaru Bay is a protected bay inside the Baa Biosphere Reserve where surface plankton blooms concentrate oceanic and reef mantas in numbers that exist nowhere else on earth. The permit system limits vessels and entry times. Azalea coordinates access in advance, positions in the queue correctly and ensures guests enter the bay with the best current orientation and minimum crowd overlap. What the permit system cannot control — the duration, approach and frequency — is where a multi-day yacht holding in the atoll has a distinct advantage.

Hanifaru Bay permit access

Entry requires a permit issued through the Baa Atoll Resort, coordinated in advance. Azalea handles the permit coordination and ensures entry is timed to the peak plankton aggregation window, typically at the incoming tide.

Multiple entry windows per day

A private yacht holding in Baa Atoll can access Hanifaru at multiple permitted sessions over several days, dramatically increasing the probability of peak aggregation — when 100 to 200 mantas feed simultaneously.

Whale shark and outer reef

Baa Atoll's outer reef system holds whale sharks and resident populations of eagle rays. Beyond Hanifaru, the atoll offers excellent drift diving along the outer channels and pristine coral gardens on the protected leeward side.

Remote overnight anchorages

The northern and eastern rim of Baa Atoll has some of the most remote anchorages in the Maldives. Light pollution is near zero, and the lagoon is large enough for Azalea to anchor without other vessels in sight.

Azalea approaches Hanifaru Bay under permit via the Dhoni, allowing the main yacht to hold at anchor outside the bay boundary. Guests transfer in small numbers, which is operationally consistent with the permit system's crowd management requirements.

  • Hanifaru Bay manta entry permit coordination
  • Multiple permitted sessions over charter days
  • Outer reef whale shark search
  • Remote overnight anchorage in the biosphere
  • Drift diving at outer channels
  • Pristine coral garden snorkelling

When to visit Baa Atoll for mantas

Hanifaru Bay's manta aggregations are seasonal and directly tied to plankton blooms. The primary season runs from June to November, with August and September representing the peak months when simultaneous feeding events involving 100 to 200 mantas occur. Outside this window, mantas are still present in the atoll but in smaller numbers.

  • June to November: primary manta aggregation season at Hanifaru Bay.
  • August to September: peak months — simultaneous feeding events most frequent.
  • December to May: mantas present but Hanifaru is less active; better for reef diving and remote anchorages.

What our captain says about Baa Atoll

"When Hanifaru is firing — August, September — there is nowhere else in the world I would rather take guests. I have seen mornings with over a hundred mantas feeding in a bay the size of a football pitch. The key is being there at the right tide and having a boat that can wait. Resort day trips have one window. With Azalea anchored in the atoll, if the morning session is slow we go back in the afternoon. That flexibility changes everything. Outside of Hanifaru, the outer reef channels are some of the best drift dives I know."

  • Book Baa Atoll charters in July to September for the best Hanifaru probability.
  • The atoll is accessible by seaplane from Malé in approximately 35 minutes.
  • The biosphere reserve protects the full ecosystem — reef quality here is among the best remaining in the Maldives.

Yes. Hanifaru Bay is a marine protected area inside the Baa Biosphere Reserve. Entry requires a permit coordinated through the Baa Atoll Resort. Azalea handles permit coordination as part of the charter planning.

Seaplane from Velana International takes approximately 35 minutes. Speedboat transfers take 3 to 4 hours depending on sea conditions. Seaplane is the standard transfer for Baa Atoll due to the distance.

August and September are the peak months for manta ray aggregations at Hanifaru Bay. The full manta season runs from June to November.

Yes, for charters of ten nights or longer. The transit between Baa and Ari crosses open water and is weather-dependent. The captain plans the crossing for calm conditions.
