Entry requires a permit issued through the Baa Atoll Resort, coordinated in advance. Azalea handles the permit coordination and ensures entry is timed to the peak plankton aggregation window, typically at the incoming tide.

Multiple entry windows per day

A private yacht holding in Baa Atoll can access Hanifaru at multiple permitted sessions over several days, dramatically increasing the probability of peak aggregation — when 100 to 200 mantas feed simultaneously.

Baa Atoll's outer reef system holds whale sharks and resident populations of eagle rays. Beyond Hanifaru, the atoll offers excellent drift diving along the outer channels and pristine coral gardens on the protected leeward side.

The northern and eastern rim of Baa Atoll has some of the most remote anchorages in the Maldives. Light pollution is near zero, and the lagoon is large enough for Azalea to anchor without other vessels in sight.

When to visit Baa Atoll for mantas

Hanifaru Bay's manta aggregations are seasonal and directly tied to plankton blooms. The primary season runs from June to November, with August and September representing the peak months when simultaneous feeding events involving 100 to 200 mantas occur. Outside this window, mantas are still present in the atoll but in smaller numbers.

  • June to November: primary manta aggregation season at Hanifaru Bay.
  • August to September: peak months — simultaneous feeding events most frequent.
  • December to May: mantas present but Hanifaru is less active; better for reef diving and remote anchorages.

"When Hanifaru is firing — August, September — there is nowhere else in the world I would rather take guests. I have seen mornings with over a hundred mantas feeding in a bay the size of a football pitch. The key is being there at the right tide and having a boat that can wait. Resort day trips have one window. With Azalea anchored in the atoll, if the morning session is slow we go back in the afternoon. That flexibility changes everything. Outside of Hanifaru, the outer reef channels are some of the best drift dives I know."

Day 1 — Arrival and first Baa anchorage

Seaplane or speedboat transfer from Malé. Crew briefing and positioning inside the biosphere lagoon for the first night.

Day 2 — Hanifaru Bay first session

Morning permitted entry to Hanifaru Bay via Dhoni. Afternoon reef snorkel or dive on the outer channel. Overnight in the lagoon.

Day 3 — Hanifaru second session and outer reef

Second Hanifaru session at optimal tide window. Afternoon outer reef drift dive. Sundowner at a remote west-facing anchorage.

Day 4 — Remote anchorage and whale shark search
